Construction sites are among the most connectivity-challenged environments in any industry. Rural sites, underground work, high-rise construction above cell tower range, and remote infrastructure projects all present scenarios where internet access is intermittent or nonexistent. InferTrust™ (Patent Pending) AEC is built with an offline-first architecture that maintains full cryptographic decision integrity regardless of network availability.
Each field device (tablet, ruggedized laptop, or mobile device) is provisioned with its own cryptographic key pair stored in the device's secure enclave or trusted platform module. These device-bound keys enable the device to sign and seal decision records locally without any network connection. The signing operation happens entirely on the device, so there is no dependency on a cloud service, authentication server, or certificate authority at the moment of record creation. When the inspector or engineer creates a decision record on site, it is sealed immediately with the device's private key.
A critical challenge with offline record-keeping is preventing after-the-fact insertion of records into the historical sequence. InferTrust™ AEC addresses this with monotonically increasing sequence (SEQ) counters maintained on each device. Every decision record includes the device ID and the next SEQ value in that device's counter. Because the counter only increments and each record references the previous record's hash, it is cryptographically infeasible to insert a record between two existing records without breaking the chain. This means that even during extended offline periods (days or weeks on remote sites), the integrity of the record sequence is maintained by the device-local chain.
Decision records created offline are queued in the device's local encrypted storage. When the device regains network connectivity (returning to the site office, entering cell range, or connecting to satellite internet), the queued records sync to the project's central record store. During sync, each record is verified: the device signature is validated, the SEQ counter continuity is checked, and the record is integrated into the project-wide decision chain. If any record fails verification during sync, it is flagged for investigation rather than silently accepted.
